I had never heard of a date shake until a few months back. Now, I keep seeing them everywhere- on juice bar menus and in magazines articles. Date shakes are on my food radar.
This winter I spent a few days visiting my parents in Palm Desert, California. Lucky for me, the Palm Desert area is known for date shakes. I learned this by spending a morning at the touristy, campy and educational Shields Date Garden. While there I watched a movie with my mom called “The Romance & Sex Life of the Date”. (It wasn’t as embarrassing as it sounds.) In a nutshell, I learned that dates are very difficult to grow. Also, the addition of sweet, brown dates make for an unattractive but tasty shake.
Shields uses their Date Crystals® and ice cream to make date shakes. I created a vegan version using whole Deglet Noor Dates that I pitted and chopped plus some almond milk, coconut milk, banana and ice. It’s a nondairy smoothie version of a date shake. Be sure to use soft dates for this smoothie. If your dates are dry and hard, you may need to soak them in water to soften and plump the dates. Hard, dry dates do not blend well.
